About the studio

I started on a secondhand wheel with a lot of wobbly first bowls, and I fell in love with how clay remembers everything: every pull of the handle, every thumbprint, every drip of glaze. Now every piece in the shop is thrown, trimmed, carved and glazed by me in my small home studio.

How a mug is made

Each mug takes a couple of weeks from start to finish. It's thrown on the wheel, left to firm up, trimmed, given a hand-pulled handle, and dried slowly. Then it's bisque fired, glazed by hand, and fired again to about 2,200°F. Carved pieces get an extra layer of slip and a few hours of sgraffito before any of that.

Why "Sleeping Bear"

Bears know how to slow down — and that's what I want these pieces to be for: slow mornings, long suppers, the quiet first sip.

Made to be used

Everything I make is food safe and meant for daily use. Pottery is happiest when it's being held.
